This study examines the approach adopted by the young Henry Cowell in his String Quartet No. 1 (Pedantic) (1916) as an alternative to the atonalism of the Second Viennese School. To this end, it draws on Spilker's (2010, 2011) research on Cowell's dissonant counterpoint, together with the theoretical frameworks proposed by Forte (1973) and Straus (2016), with particular emphasis on interval-class vectors. In this context, quantitative and qualitative indices of the consonances and dissonances employed by the composer were established, alongside an examination of the density and behavior of interval-class vectors. This analytical approach enabled the identification of the work's temporal, structural, and formal parameters.
